The town of Harrison was in shock after a 13-year-old died Sunday, June 9, after falling from a five-story parking garage on Halstead Avenue in Harrison.
According to the Metropolitan Transit Authority police, at around 5:45 p.m. Mark Anthony Giordano and four friends were on the rooftop of the garage when the teenager lost control of an e-bike, and fell from top of the structure.
Local emergency medical services arrived and transported Giordano to White Plains Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The MTAPD said preliminary investigations have not raised any suspicion of foul play, and the other four minors on the rooftop were not injured.
Giordano was an accomplished athlete, wrestling at the varsity level for Harrison High School, where he won All-League honors and qualified for the Sectional Championship despite only being in eighth grade.
A post on the Harrison High School wrestling team’s Instagram said, “His potential on the mats and the football field seemed limitless. However, beyond his athletic prowess, Mark was always kind, respectful, and a loving teammate, brother, and son.”
The Harrison Central School District Superintendent Louis N. Wool wrote on June 10, “We have mobilized support for our middle and high school students, faculty, and staff and extend that support to anyone in our schools who may have known this resilient and remarkable young man.”
A GoFundMe page for Giordano’s family had received more than $135,000 as of June 12 from almost 2,000 donors. The page was filled with heartfelt messages and dedications to his family, reflecting the profound impact his loss has had on families in the Harrison community.
