With a couple of stinging early April, one-goal losses firmly in the rear view, the Rye girls lacrosse team (5-3) seems to be right where they need to be entering a home game at 7 tonight against Bronxville (7-6).

In their most complete game of the season on both sides of the ball, the Garnets won 12-9 Tuesday at Yorktown (7-5), their second straight after last Thursday’s 14-6 victory against Ursuline (7-3).

“We came out a little flat and spotted them a three-goal lead,” Rye coach Michelle Mason said after beating Yorktown. “But we battled back, and dominated at times. We needed this one.”

After falling behind against a hungry Huskers team playing at home, Rye responded like the six-time Section 1 champs they are, outscoring Yorktown 9-1 over the final 18 minutes of the first half.

With 10 goals scored in her past two games, senior Caroline Doyle is setting the offensive tone for the Garnets of late. The Duke University commit showed the range of her stick work and athleticism, scoring four of her five goals in the first half to put Rye ahead 9-4 at the half.

Sophomore Blake Sasse, senior Mary Sack, and junior Alex Wood all got in on the scoring in the second half. Yorktown started back-up sophomore goalie Sam Conboy, who admirably minded the net with some great stops, holding Rye to just one goal in the third. When Huskers’ slippery attack Lily Diaz scored with under a minute to go in the third quarter, it cut Rye’s lead to 9-7 and sent Yorktown fans to their feet.

Throughout a nervy final quarter, the Garnets showed why they were a Class C state semifinalist in 2024. Rye pounced on loose ground balls and extended possessions, slowly wearing down the Huskers defense, as good teams do. After enduring an untimely two-minute penalty for a high stick, Doyle came back onto the field to mark Rye’s 12th and final goal of the game.
