Over 200 people descended on the Village Green Aug. 18 to commemorate Maj. Gen. Lafayette’s historic visit to the Square House Inn and Tavern.

The Rye Historical Society, in partnership with the Rye Free Reading Room and American Friends of Lafayette, sponsored the event, which featured reenactments, live music, historic costumes, Square House tours, and activities for all ages.

The highlight of the afternoon was a historical theatrical performance, “Lafayette’s Visit to the Square House Inn & Tavern in Rye.”

Participants watched as actors dressed in period costumes recreated Lafayette’s historic visit, with Douglas Carey portraying Mr. Penfield, the innkeeper at the Square House.

Lafayette himself also made an appearance, courtesy of the American Friends of Lafayette.
