As Coach Beau Morki explained, “This is a rebuilding year for the team.” After winning the NYAISA championship last year, 11 members graduated and this year’s team is made up of five seniors, seven juniors, six sophomores, and two freshmen.
Their lack of experience and several injuries account for their 2-3 record; but they are gradually improving and their progress was demonstrated in their 2-0 win over Convent of Sacred Heart on September 19.
Junior Captain Kathleen Daly played well up top, scoring both goals, and Captain Margaret Brady, also a junior, anchored the defense with superb play. This was the first shutout for their new keeper, Maggie Ahern, who had five saves. Ahern, a junior transfer from the American School in London, brings much needed experience to this young team.
The first goal came unassisted off a stolen ball by Daly and the second was well set up by senior Captain Sam Corbi, who laid off a great ball to Daly for a phenomenal finish.
Morki said the key to the team’s success was the defense. “They played well and when they play well, the team performs up to the standard we expect.”
Morki explained that the final third of play is always the latest to develop with any team. “I am very proud of our progress thus far.”
