If Summer Has to End, Let There Always Be Summerfest

Last year, because of a predicted severe storm, Doug Carey made the difficult decision to cancel the 24th Annual Summerfest. This year, storms threatened once again but Doug, along with volunteers from Leaders of Tomorrow Educational Enrichment Organization, and Rye Reccreation staff were not deterred. The event went off September 3 with just one hitch — it rained on the Jack Curran Memorial Bare-Handed Softball game.

But after the potato sack races and water balloon throwing and ice cream eating contests were done, couples swayed to the lush sounds of the Reddy Valentino Orchestra thanks to the Patricia F. and John Carey Jr. Memorial music program.

Midway through the music, Doug Carey, State Senator George Latimer, and Mayor Joe Sack roasted honoree Ralph Vellone, who was to have been honored last year, and had waited patiently for his shining moment.
