On March 19, a Mendota Avenue property owner had a tree cut down in her yard and deposited two piles of the resultant wood chips behind her house on Wappanocca Avenue, claiming it was the back of her property (including the brook that runs through it), and that the wood chips would prevent weeds from growing.
A Wappanocca resident became concerned because not only were some of the wood chips in the road, but more importantly, “if the wood chips washed into the brook, they could cause blockage and eventually lead to flooding locally and as far down as the marina.”
The concerned citizen called the City Manager. Not hearing back right away, she called DPW, who referred her to Christian Miller, the City Planner. Mr. Miller was instrumental in having the wood chips removed a week later.
The concerned citizen wants people to know, “You cannot dump or store leaves, wood chips, or any other debris near the brook. No resident owns the brook even if it runs through his property. The brook is owned by The City Corp of Engineers.”
