Rye’s girls lacrosse team lost to Nyack in a painfully familiar fashion Tuesday, 13-12 in overtime, the same score as last year’s section championship game.

The Garnets tied the game with 4:07 left in regulation, then remained on the attack until the final whistle. A potential game-winner for Rye sailed just over the goal with 1.5 seconds left, sending the game to overtime.

Nyack (6-3) ended it just 26 seconds into overtime, repeating the result of the 2025 Section 1 Class C championship game, which the RedHawks won to carry their undefeated season into the state tournament.

On Tuesday, Rye (8-4) opened the scoring 90 seconds into the game, and the teams took turns scoring for the first 10 minutes. The Garnets took a 4-2 lead, then the RiverHawks answered with three straight to go ahead 5-4 early in the second quarter.

Rye then scored three in a row to reclaim a 7-5 lead 30 seconds before halftime. The Garnets couldn’t carry the two-goal margin into the break, as Nyack scored with 6 seconds on the clock. The RiverHawks then tied the score again 30 seconds into the third quarter.

The two evenly matched teams then went back and forth again, alternating goals until Nyack took its largest lead, 11-9, in the final 30 seconds of the third.

Rye pulled even with 7:14 left, then the scoring slowed to a near halt. Each team scored once in the final seven minutes of regulation. Nyack took a 12-11 lead with 5:21 remaining, then Rye evened the score with a little over four minutes left.

The loss was Rye’s first of the year against an in-state opponent, snapping a six-game win streak. Unlike last season, the two teams won’t meet again in the playoffs. Nyack moved up to Class B, where it’s currently in position for the No. 1 seed. Meanwhile, Rye remains in the top spot of the Class C standings.

The Garnets play three straight on the road, starting Saturday at Ridgefield (Conn.), before concluding the regular season May 18 at home against Greenwich (Conn.). Connecticut teams handed Rye and Nyack four of their combined six losses entering Tuesday.
