The Mission for Girls Club recently raised $200 to help send a Kenyan girl to high school.
The idea for the club germinated after Rye Middle School eighth graders Carina Burroughs and Kana White read an article about the importance of education in lifting girls and women out of poverty. The classmates became passionate about this issue and through the Kenya Education Fund were able to find a student to sponsor.
Part of their mission has been accomplished, because in the next few weeks Lydia Okumu Akoth, who has an affinity for writing, debate, and history, will begin her studies. She hopes to become a lawyer one day and serve her country.
The annual expense of sending a girl to high school in Kenya is $600. “We would like to expand our project and empower more girls,” said Carina, “but we need additional funds first.”
Donations are welcome, and would be applied to Lydia Akoth’s education. Contact Rye Youth Council Middle School Advocate Sara Braun, the club’s advisor, at sbraunryc@optonline.net.
