Many young singers and songwriters dream of recording one day. For one Rye High School graduate, that dream has become a reality. Jess Turner recently released her eponymous debut album, which she describes as a combination of catchy pop sounds and classical.
One of the main inspirations for her songs comes from her love of literature. “All the books I read in middle and high school and then as an English major in college are a big part,” said Turner, who graduated from Princeton earlier this year. “I incorporate storytelling in my music through metaphors and imagery.”
Now that she’s out of school, Turner says, she is excited to focus on her music. “It’s exciting, but also scary,” she admits.
Her long-term goal is to find a job where she can continue to create her own music. “Anything that will allow me to write original music and support myself is what I am hoping to do.”
To all Rye High School students with a passion for music, Turner says encouragingly, “Keep working on your music until you create sounds and lyrics you are happy with. A lot of people say they can’t do something because they aren’t creative enough. I think that everyone can be creative if they focus on what they want to do and think about what inspires them.”
