Joan Tembeck of Rye, N.Y. died March 27, 2021. She was 78.
Born in the Bronx on August 15, 1942, she was the daughter of John and Phyllis DeMatteis. She graduated from St. Catherine’s Academy and received both her B.A. and M.A. degrees from St. John’s University.
She and her husband, John P. Tembeck Jr., the president and owner of JTJ Industries in Manhattan, had five children and lived in Rye for 37 years. They were members of Westchester Country Club and spent their summers in Sag Harbor, N.Y.
A talented cook, she hosted many memorable Sunday dinners. She loved animals, interior design, and early morning classes at Equinox Fitness. She will be remembered for her quick wit and maternal insight.
Mrs. Tembeck was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, and her eldest son, John Tembeck III. She is survived by her children, Christopher, Gregory (Jessica), Robert, and Jennifer Tembeck; six grandchildren; and her brother, Jon DeMatteis.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated March 31 at the Church of the Resurrection.
