John Patrick O’Grady Jr., a resident of Lauderdale by the Sea, Fla., died on July 20, 2023. He was 70.
Born in New York, N.Y., the son of John and Marion Irene (Donnellan) O’Grady, he grew up on North Manursing Island in Rye, N.Y.
In 1970 he graduated from Canterbury High School, and four years later received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Georgetown University.
Mr. O’Grady was President of Laurel Hill Securities, LLC and before that was Chief Operating Officer of Georgeson Securities Corporation.
For most of his life he resided in New York City. In 2020, he relocated to Florida.
An accomplished bass vocalist, he was member #89 of the Georgetown Chimes. He founded the Chimes’ Cherry Tree Massacre, one of the longest running <a cappella> shows on the East Coast. It has been held every February for 50 years.
Throughout his life, Mr. O’Grady never missed a chance to sing, whether with the Chimes, his parish choir, friends, or family.
Mr. O’Grady was known for his wit and kindness, which were often exhibited through his oratory gifts while telling a tale or raising a glass with loved ones. He made friends wherever he went and will be dearly missed by all who were blessed to know him.
He is survived by three sisters: Joan Barada (Drew) of Portola Valley, Calif., Marion O’Grady of Nantucket, Mass., and Adele Botticelli of New York, N.Y. and Nantucket, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Ann Grace O’Grady.
A Mass of Christian burial was held July 29 at Church of the Resurrection in Rye. Interment followed at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla.
