Julie Finnis of Purchase, N.Y. and Jupiter, Fla., who was a cherished mother and grandmother died on Apr. 18, 2024 with her daughter at her side.
Born on Nov. 19, 1948, Julie grew up in Morristown, New Jersey. Following a 15-year advertising career in New York City, she left to raise her family. Julie and her husband Richard were married in 1974 and moved out of the city to Rye in 1976 where they raised two daughters. The family attended Christ’s Church in Rye and especially enjoyed their summers at The Shenorock and Appawamis Clubs in town. A dedicated mother, Julie supported her daughters’ competitive pursuits across a variety of sports including swimming, lacrosse, soccer, skiing and equestrian often taking them on trips across the country. She also consistently volunteered her time at her daughters’ schools: Greenwich Academy and St. Andrew’s School (in Fla. following the family’s relocation in the 90’s).
As her daughters left home for college, Julie spent more time playing tennis and golf as well as volunteering for a number of organizations. In 2015, she relocated back to the Rye area. This made her nearby for the birth of her first two grandchildren, followed by the subsequent birth of her second two grandchildren in Florida. Julie ensured her grandchildren sat down and enjoyed healthy meals each day, appreciated the simple beauty in nature around them and regularly attended church. Her always subtle lessons in faith and strength of character will be cherished forever. While giving so much of herself to her grandchildren, Julie also nurtured her own love of painting, gardening, birdwatching and Bible study. Julie’s life was full of love, laughter and enjoyment. She leaves a legacy of kindness, commitment, and character that will forever inspire her family. She was predeceased by her husband of 26 years, Richard Finnis. Julie is survived and deeply beloved by her two daughters, Abigail Finnis of Purchase, NY and Amanda Finnis of Jupiter, Fla. as well as four grandchildren (Lachlan, Ainsley, Rhys and Lily). A service of remembrance will be held at Christ’s Church in Rye on Friday, May 17 at 1 p.m., with a reception to follow at Westchester Country Club.
