A major storm that floods homes in our community could make them uninsurable and ratchet down property value similar to what is unfolding from other climate disasters.
What’s Hotter Than A Gas-Powered Fireplace? The Earth. According to NASA, the last 10 years were the hottest on record. In January 2025, the Los Angeles wildfires caused more than $250 billion in devastation. This same month the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change confirmed the chance of staying below 1.5 degrees of warming to prevent irreversible climate tipping points is now highly unlikely.
Meanwhile, The Rye Record published a misguided story promoting the purchase of gas fireplaces that lock in 10-15 years of carbon emissions. Rye, like every community across the U.S., has underestimated climate risk. A major storm that floods homes in our community could make them uninsurable and ratchet down property value similar to what is unfolding from other climate disasters.
As a concerned father and Rye Sustainability Committee member, I stand with local parents who recognize that we must decarbonize our homes to create a safe future for our children. RYE100 is a volunteer organization that seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Rye to net zero by 2040. The Rye Record is a vital platform that should cultivate climate stories on how families can reduce their carbon footprint.
Forgo gas and wood burning fireplaces. Go electric.
