I would like to thank John Nugent for his thoughtful article, “Rye is Too Car Focused.”
As a longtime Rye resident, I have watched our beautiful city evolve over many decades. One of Rye’s greatest treasures is that so much of it can be enjoyed on foot or by bicycle.
There was a time when I rode my bicycle almost every day. I no longer do — not because I’ve lost the desire, but because today’s traffic makes me feel it simply isn’t safe. I miss those rides.
Crossing some intersections can also be intimidating, especially for seniors, children, and anyone with mobility challenges. We shouldn’t have to feel that way in our own hometown.
Improving crosswalks, calming traffic where appropriate, and creating safer routes for cyclists and pedestrians are not anti-car ideas. They are pro-community ideas. A safer, more walkable Rye benefits everyone — including drivers.
I hope Mr. Nugent’s article starts an open conversation about preserving the character of Rye while making it safer and more welcoming for everyone.
