In the Aug. 23 edition of The Rye Record, a letter from Councilman William Henderson strongly suggested that people opt out of Westchester Power’s renewable energy provider program.
His stance focuses primarily on the fact that Westchester Power’s renewable energy plan costs more than Con Ed’s traditional mix of non-renewable and lower cost energy sources.
I think it’s fine to suggest that folks can actually opt out of the Westchester Power program if they find it beyond their budget. Henderson ends his letter telling people how to go about opting out and to “tell your friends and family.”
But opting out simply because it costs more is not giving renewable energy the fair chance it needs to eventually bring prices down, nor is it helping the fight against global warming.
Isn’t that all the more reason for those who can afford it to do what they can to help our environment? Is paying a few more dollars each month for their power bill really going to affect their quality of life?
On the contrary — due primarily to the burning of fossil fuels, the United Nations tells us, the world is now warming faster than at any point in recorded history.
If we are the second wealthiest suburb in the country, it’s ludicrous that we wouldn’t be doing everything we can in the fight against climate change. Sure, opt out of renewable energy if it breaks your budget. But I’m betting my fixed income it’s just not going to be that hard for most residents of this town to pay for it.
Global warming is a real threat. Let’s all do what we can to try to reverse it and lessen its impact. Please. And tell your friends and family.
Letter: Paying More For Cleaner Energy Through Westchester Power is Worth it

In the Aug. 23 edition of The Rye Record, a letter from Councilman William Henderson strongly suggested that people opt out of Westchester Power’s renewable energy provider program.
His stance focuses primarily on the fact that Westchester Power’s renewable energy plan costs more than Con Ed’s traditional mix of non-renewable and lower cost energy sources.
Interestingly, two pages beyond his letter is the bold headline, “Rye Named Second Wealthiest Suburb in U.S.”
I think it’s fine to suggest that folks can actually opt out of the Westchester Power program if they find it beyond their budget. Henderson ends his letter telling people how to go about opting out and to “tell your friends and family.”
