For some extraordinary reason the Rye City Council in conjunction the city manager and the Department of Public Works seems completely incapable of maintaining the car parks in the city of Rye.
The three car parks in the central business district are in disgraceful condition.
Less than two years ago the city resurfaced the car park on the south west of Purchase Street, including new lighting and new planting. It has since been completely neglected.
The car park on the northwest side is filthy with crumbling blacktop, broken curbs, and traffic islands covered in weeds.
The car park on the west side of Purchase Street has not been resurfaced in over 25 years.
As for the train station car parks that City of Rye leases from the MTA — they are in “third world” condition. Rye city is responsible under the lease agreement with the MTA for the maintenance of the car parks.
The residents of Rye, the merchants, and the property owners deserve much better from those that supposedly represent their interests, or least they keep telling us they do.
If the DPW is incapable of doing what it is supposed to do, then let’s find a landscape contractor who has the skills, manpower, and equipment to undertake this relatively simple but important work.
