With the winter sports season set to start, let’s take a moment to look back at some of the local athletes who excelled on the fields and the courts this fall.
Earning a laurel and a hearty handshake are, first off, the boys who led the Rye High, Rye Neck, and Rye Country Day soccer teams into the playoffs. Our star of stars has to be the Panthers’ Luis Galeano, who was named to the all-State team. Cousin Will Galeano and striker Reed Peterson were Honorable Mention all-League choices. The Galeanos were also named to The Journal News all-Tournament team.
A mile up the road, the Garnets’ Will Colwell was voted to his all-League team, and Leo Gomes earned Honorable Mention. Even farther up Boston Post Road, Felipe Gomez, Michael Karr, Cole Price, and David Townley are the newly named all-Fairchester Athletic Association players for the Wildcats, undefeated in the regular season. Goalkeeper Noah Swan took Honorable Mention. Townley and Karr were also chosen to play in the Western New England Private School all-star game.
Another milestone worth noting: Rye Country Day Boys’ Soccer Coach Cristiano Pereira won his 100th contest at the Wildcats’ helm.
Over on the gridiron, the votes for public school post-season football honors were still being tabulated at press time. But the private school all-star teams were announced, and Rye Country Day’s Billy Grossman, Matthew Farber, Sean Price, and Ryan Wolitzer are all-FAA for 2015. Jared Jones and Evander Jackson earned Honorable Mention. To top off the honors, Coach John Calandros and his fellow coaches named Wolitzer winner of the annual Wildcat Award.
