After graduating eight varsity seniors, many of the spots on the Rye boys tennis team’s depth chart are up for grabs. That likely won’t be the case again for several years, as a number of young, talented players are returning or joining the Garnets’ rebuild this spring.
Four-year starter Alex Gordon is the only returning senior on a team that includes two juniors, 10 sophomores, a freshman, and two eighth graders. Joining Gordon as co-captains are sophomores Filip Glitterstam and Lou Kim-Reuter, who return to make up Rye’s No. 1 doubles team.
“I am so excited about this group,” said Rye coach Sue Dickson. “With 10 sophomores, we have a great core to build upon. I’ve even watched them improve in the last two weeks and bring a great positive spirit to the whole group. Every day I love coming to practice. This group works hard to develop their skills.”
Dickson expects strong singles performances from junior Luke Gordon and eighth-grader Grant Lobo.
“Grant is a player to watch,” she said. “He will be on our radar for many years; he is an eighth-grade player who has already earned the No. 1 singles spot. We are fortunate to have him joining the ranks.”
Another eighth grader, Xavier Morell, will play on Rye’s No. 2 doubles team, alongside his older brother, freshman Timothy Morell.
Rye had a record of 9-3 last season, with two of the three losses coming to a consistently strong Scarsdale team. The Garnets were competitive in every match, and the 2025 season opener on April 1 showed signs that will be the case again this year, as Rye beat Clarkstown South 4-3, including a sweep in doubles matches.
“Our opening match was a lot of fun,” Dickson said. “We have much to be grateful for and the future looks bright. We work hard, play with enthusiasm, and have fun.”
