Rainy conditions Thursday led to another discharge of partially treated sewage from the Mamaroneck Sanitary Sewer District Wastewater Treatment Plant.
An estimated 5 million gallons of disinfected, but only partially treated, discharge was pumped into Long Island Sound, according to the latest NY Alert message sent around 9 p.m. Thursday.
Frequent rainfall this summer has caused less-than-ideal treatment conditions from the plant on several occasions. An estimated 4 million gallons of partially treated sewage came from the plant on Aug. 3, plus 536,000 gallons on July 21.
The facility at 199 West Boston Post Road is undergoing construction, which is expected to continue for the next five years. Westchester County’s Department of Environmental Facilities (DEF) previously told The Record that when the plant flow exceeds 28 million gallons per day, portions of the flow bypass the facility’s secondary treatment process.
During this construction phase, the county agreed to issue a NY Alert and a report of noncompliance when wastewater receives only partial treatment.
