No injuries were reported after a fire broke out Monday night at the Midland Avenue Deli, sending smoke through a mixed-use building and prompting a multi-agency emergency response.

Just before 10 p.m., Rye firefighters were dispatched to 382 Midland Ave. after reports of smoke in the basement. The building houses a ground-floor deli with two apartments above.

Upon arrival, crews encountered light smoke throughout the structure, soon visible from the outside, leading to an upgrade of the initial alarm and calls for backup.

Firefighters traced the flames to a wall near commercial kitchen equipment and successfully contained the fire to that room. The blaze was brought under control within 45 minutes, despite the hot and humid weather yesterday.

The Westchester Cause and Origin Team later determined the fire was accidental, caused by a failure in the sheet metal surrounding the deli’s appliances.

The fire department was aided by the Rye Police Department, Port Chester/Rye/Rye Brook EMS, and Con Edison.
