Mt. Vernon Man Drowns Off Playland
The evening of June 12, at 7: 19 p.m., Westchester County Police and EMS were notified a man was under water, possibly drowning off Playland, near Edith Read Sanctuary in area signed for no swimming. HQ officer, Marine Unit dispatched. Twenty-one-year-old Elvin Acquah of Mount Vernon was taken to Greenwich Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Resident made complaint to Westchester County regarding Rye Police handling of the incident. Original 911 calls bounced to Nassau County, then Manhattan, before being directed to Rye Police, a recurring problem in Playland Park area.
