Rye is set to make a cameo in a new Netflix show.
Camera crews for the streaming platform’s new adaptation of “Unaccustomed Earth” filmed in Rye on Tuesday, as residents on the ground and online expressed their excitement for their hometown once again hitting the big screen.
“My old stomping ground and it looks like right in front of my old house! How exciting,” one Instagram user commented on a Ryemarkable Moms video of the film crews.
“This is so exciting!! Definitely going to walk by with the dogs… maybe they need some cute furry extras,” another user wrote.
The filming mostly took place on Playland Parkway and Redfield Street, according to Interim City Manager Brian Shea, with minor detours routed through Redfield and Rye Beach Avenue.
Shea said Netflix also filmed part of the same TV series in Rye this past September, and gave “substantial advance outreach” ahead of this week’s taping.
“We have received no reports of complaints or issues related to the activity,” he added.
The production crew paid the city $8,000 for the film permit, according to city officials.
Netflix’s new TV series is inspired by author Jhumpa Lahiri’s “Unaccustomed Earth” – a dramatic collection of short stories about an elite Indian American immigrant community in Cambridge, Mass., that gets rocked by a scandalous affair.
Freida Pinto headlines the cast as the show’s main character, Parul Chaudhury. Pinto, originally from Bombay (now Mumbai), India, is known for her roles in “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” and more.
The last major series to film in Rye was Apple TV’s “Your Friends & Neighbors,” starring Jon Hamm – whose character, a former hedge fund manager, begins stealing from his wealthy neighbors after losing his job and marriage.
Hamm began filming in Rye in May 2024, at which point the “Mad Men” star reportedly visited Saigon Table, Sunshine Coffee Roasters, and even used The Snackery as his dressing room. The crew returned to shoot more of “Your Friends & Neighbors” this past April.
