Through the Freedom of Information Act, The Rye Record has obtained the employment contract for Dr. Frank Alvarez. The new School Superintendent will earn $243,600 per year with a proviso in the contract that clearly states this amount cannot be reduced. “The superintendent’s salary shall not in any event be reduced from the previous year’s amount upon annual review and determination”.
There is no incentive package or any bonus structure included in the contract, which begins July 1. The current supervisor, Dr. Edward Shine, earns approximately $280,000 annually after 18 years of service.
The contract’s rider prohibiting any salary reduction is probably a reaction to the recent comments by Governor Andrew Cuomo about putting a school superintendent salary cap in place. That cap would base salary on the number of students in a district.
Dr. Alvarez has been superintendent for the Montclair Public Schools district in Montclair, N.J. for nine years. New Jersey already has a superintendent’s salary cap of $174,000 in place.
