Rye Neck clinched its first League title since 2005 on Monday. They are 13-3 overall and 8-0 in Conference 3 League A play.
The Panthers defeated Briarcliff 230-241 at Hampshire on Monday. They wrap up the regular season today at Hudson Hills against Ossining. Michael Spiegel shot a 41 against Briarcliff. Ryan Morningstar shot a 42, and Craig Maggio scored a very important 52 from the sixth team position to clinch the title.
Spiegel, a senior captain, has broken 40 four times, with a low of 37 at Hampshire last month. He played tournaments all last summer and that experience has paid off, according to Coach Mark Canno. Spiegel looks to become the first Rye Neck golfer to make it to the Sectionals since Brian Bartow in 2006.
Morningstar, a junior, also has been on a hot streak. He shot a 39 at Hampshire and a 38 at Metropolis last month and also has a great chance to qualify for Sectionals. He has improved by over three strokes per nine holes since last season said Canno who is in his ninth year coaching at Rye neck.
The Panthers also are getting great performances from senior Captain Whitney Spiegel — Michael’s twin sister — who shot a 40 at Hampshire last month and 43 at Metropolis. She has been very steady this season. “I will hate to lose her and Michael next year,” Canno said.
Against Valhalla earlier this month, Michael Spiegel shot a 40 and Morningstar a 42. Spiegel shot a 37 during to help notch the team’s 10th season victory.
Captain Luke Murphy and senior Gavin Laganialso have been playing well, Canno said.
The Panthers have seen solid play from senior Alex Anderson and juniors Luke Petrillo and Charlie Luzio. “We have gotten 12 players in matches already this season. It’s been a total team effort and I hope we can finish strong,” Canno said.
