After a long wait, unofficial returns show that two-term Rye City Councilmember Catherine Parker, running as a Democrat, narrowly defeated Republican John Verni of Mamaroneck by 403 votes November 5. With 100 percent of voting districts reporting, she won with 6,710 votes; Verni had 6,307. Thomas Murphy, who challenged Parker in a September Democratic primary, remained on the Working Family line and garnered 447 votes.

Parker will begin serving on the County Board of Legislators in January representing District 7, covering Rye, Mamaroneck, Larchmont, and parts of New Rochelle.

Verni waited until the absentee ballots were counted and some “irregularities” were reviewed before conceding November 19. Verni said, “I told Catherine that I just wanted to be sure the final votes were counted and she agreed graciously that every vote counts. I thanked her for running a cordial campaign.” He also said he hopes that Parker continues her record of bipartisanship.
