Peter J. Sinnott III, 82, passed away peacefully at home on April 12, 2023, surrounded by his family. He was a longtime resident of Rye, New York, where he was a dedicated parishioner of the Church of the Resurrection.
Born on January 20, 1941, he was the son of Janice and Peter Sinnott Jr. He grew up in Larchmont, New York. He graduated from The Canterbury School, attended Georgetown University, and earned his undergraduate degree from Babson College.
After college, he joined the Sinnott Company, a real estate management, development, and construction concern founded by his grandfather in 1911 in the Bronx. He became president in 1977. It was under his management that Sinnott Company became the first contractor in New York City to oversee a solar project, as well as the first contractor in Westchester County to partner with Con Ed on a solar energy project.
Mr. Sinnott will be remembered by all as a force of nature with an indomitable spirit and zest for life. He was well known for cutting quite the rug at social events and for excelling at swimming, squash, tennis, paddle tennis, golf, and skiing. In 2010, he received a heart transplant and continued his active lifestyle. Six weeks after the surgery, he was skiing at his much-loved Stratton Mountain, and just 11 months after receiving a new heart he completed the New York City Marathon, accompanied by his heart surgeon and his son Peter.
He was an active and longtime member of Apawamis Club, where he served on the Board of Governors and chaired many committees over the years. He was also a member of The United States Seniors’ Golf Association. Along with his wife, Rosemary, he co-chaired United Way of Rye, the $2 million Rye Free Reading Room building campaign, and the nationally recognized Rye Invitational Paddle Tennis Tournament.
Mr. Sinnott was predeceased by his beautiful and loving wife of 52 years, Rosemary Sinnott, and his twin sisters, Ann Fleming and Barbara Shea. He is survived by his son, Peter IV (Erin), his grandson, Michael, of Rye, as well as his sisters, Karen Sinnott of New Rochelle, N.Y. and Maura Sinnott Allen of Rochester, N.Y.
A celebration of his life will be held April 21 at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye. Contributions in Peter Sinnott’s memory may be made to the Rye Free Reading Room.
