Rye’s softball team trailed Nyack by four runs in the fifth before battling back to tie the score in the bottom of the inning. In the sixth, the offense kept rolling to give the Garnets an 8-5 win Thursday.

With the recent hot streak – three wins in their past four games – the Garnets (6-11) have secured a spot in the postseason. They may even improve their seeding after beating Nyack (5-12), which entered Thursday directly ahead of them in the standings.

Rye trailed 4-0 until junior Clara Meszkat drove in sophomore Sophiah Collins in the fourth. Nyack answered to go ahead 5-1 in the top of the fifth, then the Garnet bats started to heat up.

Six straight Rye hitters got on base in the fifth, with juniors Penelope Gilmore, Reese McGill, and Caroline Joyce each driving in one run to tie the score at 5-5.

In the sixth, sophomores Olivia Hodes and Emma Stark both singled, and Gilmore doubled to score them both. Gilmore, who also pitched a complete game with five strikeouts and five earned runs, advanced to third base on a wild pitch. McGill then drove her in for Rye’s eighth and final run.

Nyack had the tying run at the plate after two hits in the top of the seventh inning, but Gilmore struck out the RedHawks’ final two batters to finish off the victory.

After a 2-9 start, the Garnets improved to 4-2 in the month of May. The regular season concludes Saturday against Clarkstown North (7-12), then Rye’s playoff path will be revealed.
