Illegal moped leads to chase

Fireworks erupted on Theodore Fremd Avenue on July 5, when a suspect riding an illegal moped took Rye police on a dangerous chase into oncoming traffic before being wrestled to the ground and arrested.

Police attempted to pull over Wilver Hiraldo, 22, on Theodore Fremd Avenue after they determined he was riding an unregistered moped. Hiraldo, of Norwalk, Conn., refused to comply with police and took off on the moped, accelerating around stopped traffic on the avenue and driving into oncoming traffic, police say.

The suspect then drove onto the sidewalk, but was caught by a police officer in pursuit on foot who was able to grab hold of Hiraldo and wrestle him to the ground, according to police. Hiraldo briefly resisted arrest before being taken into custody, police said.

According to police, one officer was injured in the melee and treated for minor injuries at Greenwich Hospital. He was later released.

Hiraldo is being charged with assault in the second degree, a felony, and three misdemeanors.

Not so random attack

Police arrested a man for a July 12 assault on Wappanocca Avenue.

Fernando Berriel Bruno, 61, was taken into custody on Friday after allegedly assaulting a victim on the morning of July 5. The victim reported the incident to Rye police that afternoon.

After a brief investigation that determined the incident was not a random attack and that the two parties knew each other, police identified Berriel Bruno, of the Bronx, and charged him with assault and harassment. He was arraigned on July 12.

Stolen car spree

A Maserati was stolen from the Greenhaven section of the city during the early morning hours on July 4.

A police officer witnessed the theft taking place and tried to apprehend the criminals, resulting in a chase with the stolen car crossing into Connecticut. The cops ultimately gave up on the chase, due to the speed of the stolen vehicle, police said.

The Maserati was then used in at least four commercial burglaries in both Connecticut and Massachusetts before being recovered in Wolcott, Conn., according to police.

In the early morning hours of July 7, two additional vehicles were stolen from Rye residences, one of which was left unlocked with the key FOB inside. That vehicle was recovered in Bridgeport, Conn.
