Rye’s registered Democratic voters only have one contest in Tuesday’s primary election – the race for state comptroller.
Tom DiNapoli, the nearly 20-year incumbent, is the front-runner on the Democratic ticket. With endorsements from Gov. Kathy Hochul, state Attorney General Letitia James, and other notable politicos – the middle-of-the-road Democrat is once again vowing to expose financial corruption, push companies to invest in climate-friendly policies, regularly audit school districts, grow the state pension, and more.
But Tuesday, two candidates who say they’re more progressive than DiNapoli are running against him.
Drew Warshaw is a triplet, and grew up in a Jewish household with his two sisters in the East Harlem area of Manhattan.
Professionally, he is the former CEO of Enterprise Community Partners, an affordable housing nonprofit. As comptroller, Warshaw says he’ll invest in the largest affordable housing fund in the country, cut taxes for working-class New Yorkers, and divest from foreign bonds, including Israeli bonds.
Raj Goyle is relatively new to the Big Apple, moving to the city for a job at the Rubin Foundation, a public art nonprofit. His parents immigrated to the U.S. from India, and raised Goyle in Wichita, Kansas, in the 1980s. Goyle went on to attend Harvard Law and work as an attorney for the ACLU before being elected to the Kansas State House.
If elected, Goyle says he’ll fight utility rate hikes, as well as invest in affordable housing and divest from fossil fuels and foreign bonds.
The winner of Tuesday’s Democratic primary will face off against Republican comptroller candidate Joseph Hernandez on Nov. 3.
Rye’s polling place is the Milton Point Firehouse. The polls are open until 9 tonight.
