The season tees off April 26 at Rye Golf Club with an Opening Day Scramble celebrating the club’s 50th anniversary as a jewel of the City.
The festivities begin at 8 a.m., with a breakfast buffet, followed by a ceremony featuring former and current City of Rye officials and RGC commissioners at 8:45 a.m. Longtime members and employees will also be recognized. A 50th Anniversary ribbon cutting and dedication will take place at 9 a.m., right before the shotgun-style scramble.
The club was founded in 1921 as Rye Country Club. It was later sold and renamed Rye Wood Country Club. In 1965, the City of Rye purchased it for $1.8 million.
Today, Rye Golf also possesses a full aquatics center with a heated, Olympic-size pool, and a separate children’s pool, along with a playground area. Whitby Castle, the 1852 Gothic-style building, which contains stones from Whitby Abbey in England, is now open for member and public dining in addition to private catered affairs and weddings.
The celebration will continue all year long at Rye Golf Club with commemorative golf tournaments, pool parties, and special evening events at Whitby Castle.
Family and individual memberships are still available for 2015. Contact the membership office at 835-3200 or visit www.ryegolfclub.com.
