At 8 p.m. on August 23, Rye Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a boat stuck on the rocks near American Yacht Club. Once on location, Incident Commander Lieutenant John Cotter saw that the distressed boat was roughly 100 yards off Shenorock Shore Club’s pier in Long Island Sound.
Cotter determined it was best for firefighters Ryan Iarocci and Cea Fong to launch the department’s inflatable boat from the club’s beach, while the support staff remained on shore. Iarocci and Fong reached the boat in distress, quickly removed the two individuals, and returned to shore. Upon arrival, the two individuals were transferred to EMS and the Rye Police Department for evaluation.
While RFD personnel were committed to the scene, mutual aid was requested from nearby fire departments to ensure coverage. Additional fire department staff were called to assist in the rescue efforts and cover the city. All RFD units returned to service at 8:57 pm.
