Real Madrid soccer legend Raul visited Rye during the varsity’s practice last week. The striker, who scored 323 goals in a career in Spain, Germany, and now in New York with the Cosmos, appeared with his national team over 100 times. He’s a family friend of Tommy Tartaglia, the Garnets’ stopper, and he shared a few tricks of the trade.
“He showed me how to keep passing and switching the ball to create more chances,” said midfielder Leo Gomes. Carl Friedrich added, “He told me, ‘Always move at full speed at the opposing defense.’”
The Garnets, 12-4, are seeded fifth in Class A as the playoffs get underway.
