Garnet Harriers Win League Titles
By Melanie Cane
The Section 1 League 2C Cross–Country Meet was one for the record books. Both the Garnets’ Boys’ and Girls’ teams took first place — for the first time ever.
Coach Michael Szarkowicz (Shark) attributed the boys’ win to their depth. Senior captain Cian Galligan placed first on the 5 K course in 16.39. Bradley Squarek followed six seconds later to nab second place. During the season, Galligan ran a personal best of 16.22, shaving 40 seconds off his best time.
Senior captain Elena Perez–Segnini led the Girls’ team, placing third overall with a time of 20.16, a personal record for the season, but a second off her best time last year. Segnini said her team’s success was due to: “Training really hard, having a lot of spirit, and possessing the motivation to do well.”
The last time the boys won the league meet was 2014; the girls last won in 2010.
Both teams are looking to medal at Counties October 28 and Sectionals November 3. The Boys’ team is ranked fourth in the section and 20th in the state.
