RHS-CROSS-COUNTRY-The Girls’ team has won all four of its dual meets, with eighth grader Natalie Weiner on a tear, placing first in every one. Currently, the Boys’ team has a 3-1 record.

The sprinters, along with coaches Joseph Brown and Blair Moynahan, are looking forward to next week’s League II-D Championship meet at Byram Hills, in which they’ll compete against rivals Harrison, Eastchester, Byram Hills, Port Chester, and Pelham.

The captains of the Boys’ team are seniors Alec Howells, Ryan Bird, and Alex Neave, the team’s top runners, and Jack Ryan, a junior. Bird has been battling a nagging ankle injury, but he is running through the injury. The coaches said that they are tailoring his training to protect his ankle.
Coach Brown said he’s proud of Howells, who excels in the 800 meters, “for training hard and pushing himself.” As for Neave, the coach added, “Alex is a very consistent runner who is having a solid senior year.”

The top story on the Girls’ team, aside from Natalie Weiner, is the big turnout. Coach Moynahan said, “Last year we had eight runners; this year we have somewhere in the mid-20s.” He had high praise for several runners who have made big contributions to the team: senior Captain Katie Brand who is running well and displays strong leadership; Anjali Logue, who also runs track, has come in second or third in every meet; and newcomer Julia Stern, a junior who formerly played field hockey, is “all heart and a pleasure to coach.”

For the majority of the team, the season will conclude later this month at the Westchester County Championship Meet. Meanwhile, the elite runners are focusing on the Sectional Meet, with the goal of qualifying for the New York State Meet next month.

Prior to the league championship meet, the team will participate in the Bobcat Run at Byram Hills on October 11.
