RHS FIELD HOCKEY: Undefeated, with Three Games to Go

RHSHockjey1When the Garnets play the Huskies in pretty much any sport, there is always something special in the air. On September 28 on their home turf, it was Rye that had that extra something and they closed the door on Harrison 5-0.

Despite starting out flat, the Garnets got down to business in short order. Lanie Agosta scored in a scramble in front of the net less than five minutes into the game. Kate Holzer tipped it in for the second goal of the half.

“By the second half, we were gelling as a team and everyone gave 100 percent,” agreed Co-Captains Abby Abate, Mallory Lynch, and Laura Martinelli.

Hockey-Fusine-GovaertFusine Govaert scored twice, once on a field goal and once off a corner. Alex Meyer scored on a tip in. Abate, Anna Rogaar, and Ellie O’Callahan each had an assist. Goalie Ali Howard had three saves.

Beating Harrison is significant in terms of the rivalry, but the Garnets are the superior team and the girls pointed out that playing a weaker team has its challenges. Govaert said, “We played carelessly. During lopsided matches games it is important to stay focused and keep playing your game and not adjust to theirs. ”

On October 3, the Garnets met a better calibre team in Bronxville, whom they tied last season. This time, Rye topped them 6-1. At the half, the score was knotted 1-1. Govaert scored twice in the first two minutes of the second half. “That really gave us momentum,” said Lynch. “We all agreed that it was our best game. Our passes were accurate and we played with high intensity.”

Rye’s field hockey team is undefeated at 8-0. They have three more games before their last home game, against Pelham, on October 15, which is Senior Night.
