No. 2 Rye shut out No. 7 Pelham at home in the Section I Class B quarterfinals October 29. The score was 7-0.
Rye dominated the entire game, getting off 21 shots to Pelham’s three, all of which were on penalties. Rye led 4-0 at the half, having had four different players score in the first 14 minutes of the game. Fucine Gouaert scored in the first five minutes off a corner from Meredith Tibbals. Three minutes later, Abby Abate found the cage on a short shot off the corner, assisted by senior Captain Alex Bennett. Bennett hit a long shot two minutes later and Emily Antinozzi tapped it in on an assist from Mallory Lynch. Bennett left the game shortly after scoring to rest an injury she received during practice the day before. She sat out the rest of the game.
Antinozzi scored again to start the second half, and three minutes later, Ellie O’Callaghan tapped it in the cage. Gouaert, who scored the Garnets first goal, also scored the last, two minutes after ‘’Callaghan.
Coach Fitzgerald praised the team for playing 60 minutes of good hockey. “They hustled, played with intensity, won almost all of the 50/50s, and so many girls really stepped it up.” Fitzgerald was referring to of the reserves who played almost half the game. “Having such a deep bench enables the starters to rest and nurse their injuries.” Fitzgerald was especially pleased with her forwards, Abate, O’Callaghan, and Antinozzi.
Rye will play Nyack, the sixth seed, in the semifinals at home November 1. Fitzgerald told the team that it does not matter that they beat Nyack earlier this season.
