RHS-soccernewIn their home game against rival Harrison October 16, the Garnets had difficulty getting their heads into the game after an emotional senior celebration. The Huskies capitalized on Rye’s slow start, attacking their goal relentlessly and scoring twice in the first seven minutes. Thanks to what Garnets coach Rich Savage described as “the unbelievable effort” by goalie Maddy Eck, those were the Huskies’ only goals of the game. As the half progressed, Rye started to settle down, and, with 13 minutes remaining, Maddie Kenny nearly scored on a long ball off the post. The Garnets were only able to score once, on a free kick by Sara DeGraw near the end of the half.

The Garnets came out powerfully in the second half, controlling the pace of the game. The girls chased down more free balls, achieved better formations and won more of the 50/50 balls. Rye had their best scoring opportunity when DeGraw crossed the ball to Amanda Engels, who just missed the net wide. Coach Savage credited co-Captain Izzy Hentschel with helping the team get back on track. “Unfortunately, it was just a little too late to start playing our best soccer.”

Eck, who had eight saves, was disappointed with the way her team played. “Harrison showed that they wanted it more than we did, and they came out with more heart and desire than us. We’ve been having trouble playing with energy during the first minutes of the game, and that’s definitely something we’re going to have to improve upon before playoffs.”

The following day, the Garnets beat White Plains 1-0 on a goal by Lily Friedrich. They lost their last regular season game by the same score to John Jay on October 19.
