The 40-member team is comprised of swimmers not only from Rye High and Middle schools, but also from Rye Neck High. Of the five seniors, three are captains: Nicole Keane, Amy Brian, and Holly Hunter. Keane, who has been on the team since seventh grade, specializes in the 100-yard butterfly. Brian, a diver, has been on the team since eighth grade. Hunter has also been on the team since seventh grade and her specialties are freestyle and breaststroke. The Captains and Coach Shannon Bolger agree that the team’s goals are to bring as many swimmers as possible to Divisionals and to have a fun season.
Coach Bolger says the girls to watch are ninth graders Hannah Simmons and Larissa Hodzic, and seventh grader Katie Laverty. There are six middle schoolers on the team and Coach Bolger says it’s exciting to have all this young talent.
The new assistant coach is Christine Corseth, who was the assistant coach for the Mamaroneck Swim Club and swam on the Mamaroneck High School Team. She also coaches the younger swimmers on the Badgers.
The Garnets are in a new league this year, and Bolger and the captains are looking forward to new competition — Ursuline, New Rochelle, Bronxville, Sleepy Hollow, Suffern, and Nyack. Their first meet is September 11 at New Rochelle High School.
