Here’s to an Undefeated Season
By Melanie Cane
A la famiglia! With three sets of sisters on the roster, Rye High’s Girls’ Tennis team is one big, happy family. That bond, combined with talent and depth, paved the way to an undefeated season, league championship, and top seed in the first officially sanctioned Section 1 Girls’ Tennis Tournament.
The team won all seven of its League matches and crossovers against top programs — Fox Lane, Mamaroneck, and Scarsdale. In all of their doubles matches they lost only two. At third singles, Elena Nunez was undefeated, as were the second, third and fourth doubles teams. Courtney Lopp and Steffi Rodilosso (#2) never lost a set, nor did freshmen Morgan Delizia and Charlotte Ausfahl (#4). Liz Peron and Lexi Francis (#3) only lost one set.
In her first year on Varsity, freshman Juliette Stone starred at first singles. She beat or put up a good fight against some tough upperclassman with State tournament pedigrees. Sophomore Catharina Ausfahl won the majority of her matches at second singles.
The top nine players are playing in the individual entry Conference Tournament which began this week. Coach Tony Campbell entered Juliette Stone in singles and four doubles teams. The teams are: Catharina Ausfahl and Elena Nunez; Niki Francis and Jocie Stone; Steffi Rodilosso and Courtney Lopp; and Liz Peron and Lexi Francis.
The Garnets will cap off post-season play in the Section 1 Team Tournament October 13-14.
For Coach Campbell, the highlight of the regular season was back-to-back wins over Scarsdale and Mamaroneck. The Garnets’ 4-3 win over Scarsdale was their closest contest so far.
“The greatness of our program and my experience in coaching is that we have the most gracious and enthusiastic players up and down the roster,” said the Campbell.
