Since last season, when Rye High’s hockey team lost to Scarsdale in the sectional semifinal and lost six seniors to graduation, they suffered their most devastating loss of all — that of their home rink to Hurricane Sandy.
The loss of Playland Ice Rink is especially upsetting to the seniors who were looking forward to playing their final season there, but Coach Jason Friesen says the team is getting over it and is now focusing on the task at hand, winning.
This “nomad team,” as assistant coach Peter Thomas refers to them, is practicing wherever they can get ice time including RCDS and Chelsea Piers in Stamford. “Home rinks” include The Hutchinson Ice Arena and The Hommocks Ice Arena.
Despite this undue hardship, they are currently 3-0 overall and 2-0 in league play. Senior Co-Captain Michael Benincasa is the top scorer, with eight goals. Their next game, and by far their hardest yet, is against Mamaroneck at The Hommocks Middle School on Friday.
