On Senior Night, February 10, the Garnets’ beat Iona Prep 8-6. The game was decided in the second period, when Rye broke open a 3-3 first period tie to score five times to Iona’s three. Neither team scored in the third period.
The Garnets’ first three goals resulted from forechecking. Rye senior Nick Berger started off the scoring at 12:48 on an assist from Will Hynson. Hynson passed from behind the net to set up Berger in the slot. Berger went top right to score. Twenty seconds later, Hynson scored on an assist by Berger, when John Barber shot from the point and Berger deflected the shot making a slick pass across to Hynson.
Then the Gaels went on a three-goal run. But, with under three minutes left in the period, Rye’s Owen Beyer scored unassisted by rushing the puck up the ice, pulling a nice move on the defender, and deking the goalie for the tie.
In the second period, Iona took the lead at 13:47, but Rye answered with three consecutive goals. First, Aidan Lavelle took a shot from the point and Berger tipped it in. On the next shift, Theo Bresolin scored off the faceoff. At 9:30, Hynson sent the puck to Tommy O’Brien, who took a shot from the point to score on the power play.
The Gaels scored again, making it 6-5. But after a pass from Beyer, O’Brien took the puck down the ice two on one with Rocco Macri and scored shorthanded. Hynson scored the final goal on a two-on-one with a shot between the goalie’s legs. Iona Prep tacked on one more goal a minute later, and that was the last goal of the game.
The Garnets are now 12-8. They start playoffs on February 21.
