The Garnet track and field team placed fifth out of 20 teams on May 25 during the Section 1 Class B Championships at Pearl River.
Despite torrential downpours and gale force winds, Rye’s runners and jumpers performed admirably, according to Coach Jim Yedowitz.
“To say that conditions were poor is putting it mildly, but through the cold, wet, and very windy conditions, we somehow got it done,’’ said Yedowitz. “The team encouraged each other and competed well.”
Rye High’s 4 x 100 meter relay won with a time of 45.2, advancing to the Section 1 Championship Meet. The relay is comprised of John Tuttle, Colby Ellis, Mike D’Antoni, and Matt Brunner. “It was a nice way for these four seniors to finish their relay season,” Yedowitz said.
Jack Ryan set a freshman record of 2:06.1 in the 800-meter run.
Ellis advanced to the Sectionals in the 100-meter dash where he sprinted it in 11.1 seconds, but did not qualify for finals. At Sectionals, Ryan set a freshman record in the 1,600 meters, running it in 4:37.8
Also at the Class B meet, Jason Chen placed fourth in the pole vault. In the triple jump, Tuttle and Rory O’Gallagher finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Jack Durkee ran and leapt for fifth in the steeplechase.
Three freshmen were among Rye’s top competitors in the League: Ryan placed sixth in the 800-meter run; Thomas Mackey finished sixth in the 400-meter run; and Alec Miranda placed third in the pentathlon.
The Garnets’ 4 x 400 meter relay placed third with Chris McGinnis, Mackey, Jerom Theunissen, and Ellis. Their 4 x 800 meter relay foursome of Jack Durkee, Ryan Bird, Kenta Takatsu, and Jack Ryan placed fourth.
“It is the end for a great group of athletes, but this is also a team of the future with many great talented stars who are ninth and 10th graders,” Yedowitz said.
