Rye Middle School’s squash club finished a successful winter season by winning the FairWest Cup on March 12 at Chelsea Piers in Stamford, Conn. Rye was one of four teams selected for the March 1 semifinals based on the team’s performance at tournaments earlier in the season.
Top players Brooke Erickson (seventh grade), Carson Roberson (sixth), Ava Apostolatos (seventh), Quinn Farr (seventh), and Sophie Ehrlich (eighth) beat Bronxville in the semifinals, and then Greenwich in the finals to win the cup.
Earlier this year, the club sent three teams to U.S. Squash Middle School Nationals in Philadelphia. Building on their success as Division 2 champions last year, the girls team was promoted to Division 1, where they finished in ninth place overall, making them the No. 1 public school girls team in the country. The boys teams also built on last year’s performance. Boys A finished sixth place in Division 2, and Boys B earned third in Division 3.
Nearly 60 students participated in Rye Squash Club for Middle School this season. Students are assigned to the beginner, development, or competitive team based on their U.S. squash rating and performance at tryouts. All students have the opportunity to compete throughout the season.
“Middle school is a great time to try new things, and we’re delighted to be able to offer three distinct levels,” said club manager Jen Crozier. “From never-evers to nationally competitive players, there’s a place for you in the Rye Squash Club.
