A week after falling to the Bronxville Broncos, Class C’s top-rated football team, by a score of 40-19, number two Rye Neck took out its frustrations on poor Tuckahoe High School, grinding the Tigers’ run defense into dust in a 37-22 win on October 2.
Leading the way was standout back Dom Brescia. The all-everything senior lugged the leather an amazing 43 times for an even more amazing 391 yards, almost averaging a first down every time he touched the ball. Four times he crossed the goal line, outscoring Tuckahoe’s entire team. (It wasn’t the co-captain’s first multi-TD game — he had three long scoring runs against Haldane two weeks ago in a 26-0 victory.
Brescia had help, not that he needed any. On a different day Chris Richart would have been the star of the game, hauling in quarterback Daniel Gottlieb’s only pass of the day for 60 yards and a touchdown. On defense, the senior DB picked off two interceptions, adding another 73 yards returning the picks. Oh, and he made six solo tackles for Coach Nick Ianello’s squad.
Sadly, the win couldn’t make up for the disappointing loss a week earlier, even though Brescia had another of his now-patented 100+ rushing efforts. Fellow senior captain Jake Sevean ran for a touchdown and Gottlieb threw for 116 yards, but it wasn’t nearly enough to keep Bronxville from avenging their 28-10 loss to the Black Hats in last year’s Sectional semifinals.
Back in August, Coach Ianello reminded us, “We lost 11 starters from last year.” Well, last year’s champs look like they’re well on the way to going back to the Sectional finals. We’ll learn more when the 3-1 Panthers host a resurgent Dobbs Ferry squad Saturday at 3 p.m.
