Rocco Lagana, treasured husband, father, and grandfather, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, June 13. He was 77 years of age.
Rocco was born on July 10, 1946, in Reggio Calabria (Italy) to Angelo and Brigida Lagana. After honorably serving in the Italian military and mastering his woodworking/cabinetry skills, he followed his dream to travel to the United States, arriving in New York in 1968 with little more than the clothing on his back. It is here where he met the love of his life, Gemma Pili. Together, they humbly built what began as a seasonal fruit stand into what is proudly known today, more than 50 years later, as Rockridge Deli & Flowers, located in Rye.
Having achieved the quintessential “American Dream,” Rocco was equally as proud of and eager to share his Italian heritage. Traveling as often as possible to Italy, he became an unofficial ambassador of Gemma’s hometown of Colledimezzo, and was an active participant and, for a number of years, served as vice president of the Colledimezzo Club.
Although in later years he spent winters at his “retirement” home in Delray Beach, Fla., he found most pleasure in time spent with family and friends both near and far, whether it be offering his children wisdom and support in continuing to operate and expand the family business, making award-winning homemade wine and sausage, and hosting festive gatherings where all were gladly welcomed and “the more” was truly “the merrier.”
In addition to his devoted wife of 52 years, Rocco is survived by his adoring children, Lorenzo (Valerie) and Brigit (Frank), and cherished grandchildren, Laurence (26), Vanessa (22), Frankie (16), and Fiona (14), and a loving extended family. He was predeceased by his dear parents and siblings Joseph Lagana and Maddalena Lagana.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Rocco’s memory can be made to the American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org
