Great progress has been made over the winter by a number of Rye parents to establish a real rugby presence in town. With assistance from Rye Recreation and local dad Ryan Fitzpatrick, Play Rugby USA has opened registration for a K-5 Flag Rugby program this spring. The program will run from early April to mid-June on Fridays from 4-6 p.m. at Sterling Field. For more information, go to https://camperregsecure.com/
playrugby.
Fitzpatrick and Play Rugby USA are also working with Rye Middle School to bring rugby to gym classes in the coming weeks. They hope to give tweens and young teens the chance to try the sport and experience the thrill of dashing down the field, side-stepping defenders, darting through gaps, and working with teammates to reach the try line.
Additionally, the Kamer Family (dad Evan and sons Cameron and Michael) has worked hard to establish solid interest amongst RHS students for a full rugby program. Practices are planned locally two afternoons a week through June. Interested students or parents can contact ryeyouthrugby@gmail.com for details and sign up.
Both programs are open to boys and girls and not limited to Rye City School students. So go ahead and sign up your kids to enjoy this fantastic, fast- moving international sport!
