Briefs: Rye Artists, Authors Showcase Their Work

Rye artists and authors share their work.

RHS Student’s Photo Exhibit

An exhibit of photographs exploring how architecture reflects the identity of a city is on display at the Rye Free Reading Room through the end of March.

Called “Through My Lens: Framing the Rhythm,” the exhibit features photographs taken by Steven Cao, a student at Rye High School.

Cao, a Rye Record photographer, has lived in three major cities, Beijing, Hong Kong, and New York, and became fascinated by their architecture and how it reflected the individual environments and unique cultures of each city.

Roberfroid’s Exhibit at RAC

Rye artist Cécile Roberfroid, whose work was recently featured in “Within Theses Space,” an exhibit at the Rye Arts Center, uses her backgrounds in art and psychology to create colorful, abstract, and fluid works.

A French-American artist with a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and advanced studies in psychology and art therapy, Roberfroid said she sees art as more than an aesthetic pursuit; it is a vessel for transformation.

Among her most striking works is “Untitled, Shield 1,” the first in a series where shield-shaped canvases take on layered forms and bold palettes, evoking both protection and vulnerability.

Rye Couple Honored by ArtsWestchester

ArtsWestchester will honor Barbara and Paul Elliot of Rye at its annual Arts Awards on April 9 for their longtime support of the arts in Westchester County.

The Elliots will receive the organization’s Patron Award as part the celebration of ArtsWestchester’s 60th anniversary.

“As our organization celebrates 60 years of service, we are proud to recognize exceptional leaders and organizations who are committed to ensuring the accessibility of the arts for all area residents,” said Kathleen Reckling, CEO of ArtsWestchester. “At a moment when the freedom of artistic expression is under threat, it has never felt more necessary to champion the essential work of our local artists, patrons, and cultural organizations.”

Author David Grann Speaks at The Osborn

The Osborn senior living center kicked off its spring WellSpring Series with a presentation by David Grann, author of the New York Times bestseller “The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder,” on March 12.

Grann discussed the book, which recounts the 1741 mutiny of the crew of the 28-gun British warship HMS Wager.

With the twists and turns of a thriller, Grann said, the story in the end was not only the captain and crew who went on trial, but the very idea of empire as well.

Grann, a writer for The New Yorker who lives in Rye Neck, is author of “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
