Rye baseball (3-2) coasted to an 11-1 victory Friday at Rye Neck, sweeping the Panthers (1-3) in two games this week.
The Garnets put up a whopping 10 hits to Rye Neck’s one, opening the scoring with a first-inning double by sophomore left fielder Luke Ontaneda. Rye drove in two runs in both the second and third innings, and propelled their 5-1 lead to 11-1 with a six-run surge for the fourth.
Junior Zach Strzalkowkski drove in senior Daniel Stone for Rye Neck’s lone run in the second.
Senior Charlie Rupp, junior Michael Talbott, and Ontaneda each tallied two hits for the Garnets. The other four were collected by David Singer and juniors Jamie Morris, Ben Fineberg, and Lucas London. Fineberg led the team with three RBIs and went 1-for-2 at the plate.
The fifth and final inning was scoreless from both dugouts, cementing a second win this week for the Garnets, who played three games in the three days.
Peter Davies got the win with an impressive showing through four innings pitched. The senior gave up one hit and one run, striking out three and walking none. Michael Bubeck came in for relief, throwing one inning of zero-run ball.
“Davies had a very nice outing,” said Rye coach Mike Bruno. “Most importantly, he threw strikes and attacked the zone.”
The Garnets will take their winning record to ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando for two contests next week over spring break. Rye will face Byram Hills at 8 a.m. Tuesday and Ketcham at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday.
“Definitely looking forward to getting away to some warmer weather,” Bruno said. “Need to focus on details and the little things. Hopefully Florida will open that door.”
