On the second day of the season, the Rye baseball team picked up its first win, beating Port Chester 6-2 on Wednesday.
Junior first baseman Jamie Morris went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored to help the Garnets even their record at 1-1. In his first varsity start, freshman pitcher Clayton McCarthy earned the win, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) over seven innings, striking out four and walking two.
Rye struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first. Morris doubled down the right field line, and junior Jackson Pineault hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run.
Port Chester scored one run in the second and another in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2. Rye had a big inning in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs to take the lead for good. Senior Vincent Sculti singled to center field, and Morris doubled to left field, each scoring two runs.
Rye showed patience at the plate, amassing seven walks. Juniors Harry Ellis and Nolan Hutson each walked twice. The Garnets also turned two double plays on defense.
Port Chester starting pitcher Welinton Lopez gave up two hits and two runs over three and one-third innings, striking out two and walking four.
