To say Byram Hills was never in control against Rye would be an understatement.
The Bobcats walked the first four batters of the game, setting the Garnets up for a five-run first inning. Rye didn’t let up from there, winning 12-0 Thursday in Armonk.
“We really came out hitting early,” said coach Mike Bruno, “and we were fortunate enough to get to 12 runs early, and we only played a five-inning game.”
Michael Bubeck pitched all five innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five. A double by senior Lucas London was Rye’s only hit in the first inning, but Byram Hills walked four and had an error to spot the Garnets a 5-0 lead.
Senior Harry Ellis added to the lead by scoring on a wild pitch in the third, then Rye added four more runs in the fourth. Senior Nolan Hutson doubled, junior Luke Ontaneda singled, and junior Ben Fineberg hit a line drive single that Byram Hills mishandled, allowing three more runs for a 10-0 lead.
In the fifth, senior Jamie Morris drove in a run, and Ellis hit a sac fly to put Rye up by a dozen.
The Garnets have now won three straight after an 0-2 start. Rye hosts its home opener at 2 p.m. Saturday against New Rochelle, a Class AAA opponent that’s been outscored 16-5 in its first two games this year.
“They’re always very good at baseball, but that’s why we’re playing them,” Bruno said of the Huguenots. “We’ve just got to keep doing what we’re doing, keep getting better. Our league is extremely difficult, Class AA is going to be extremely difficult. We want to make sure we’re playing our best baseball, and New Rochelle is going to help us do that.”
